The commercial launch of a 3.5G high-speed service has been started in Portugal by mobile operator Vodafone Portugal for portable computers.
Vodafone Portugal said it will invest between EUR10m and EUR15m for the new HSPDA service (high-speed packet data access). Vodafone Portugal customers will be able to use the HSPDA data card to access the Internet through the operator’s mobile network at speeds of up to 1.8Mb/s, some four times the speed of the prior 3G system.
Vodafone Portugal expects many of its 500,000 3G customers in Portugal to move to the new system and said mobile phones offering the 3.5G service should be available in the fourth quarter this year.
Plans to introduce a 3.5G service have also been announced by TMN and Sonaecom’s mobile carrier Optimus.
