Thai mobile operators expecting to post profits rise

Thai mobile phone operators, Advanced Info Service (AIS) and True Corp, are both expecting to post a rise in earning for 2004 due to a rise in subscribers and gains from debt restructuring.

According to industry analysts AIS is expected to post a net profit of THB20.26bn for 2004, up 9.3% from THB18.53bn in 2003, off the back of 1.94m new subscribers and total revenue of THB97bn. True Corp, which also operates fixed line services, is expected to make a net profit of THB250m, its first full year profit since 1997-98 and after posting a loss of THB5.67bn in 2003.

True’s turnaround is believed to have come from gains from debt refinancing at its Asia Wireless Communication unit and improved performance form its TA Orange mobile unit. Thailand’s largest telecomms group, Shin Corp., is expected to have fallen after it benefitted from extraordinary gains in 2003. Analysts predict a drop of 10% in net profits to THB8.73bn for 2004, reports Dow Jones.
