A personal status court in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, is soon expected to decide whether a divorce conducted by e-mail can be considered legal or not.
The case involves an American man of Arab origin who had converted to Islam and his Saudi-Arabian wife – both journalists in their thirties. The woman was living in a separate villa when her husband informed her by e-mail about the divorce. He then filed a case at the Dubai court.
According to Gulf News traditional Muslim laws allow a man to divorce his wife by simply telling her “I divorce you”.
