Free Wi-Fi now – Insight – spread of Wi-Fi could threaten 2.5G and 3G businesses – Brief Article
Wi-Fi everywhere could throw wireline telcos into the red simply through its displacement of the second phone market. Mobile carriers will see it as a threat to their 2.5G and 3G businesses. Hence the pressure is on for Washington to throw a net around 802.11 operators in the form of a licensing regime, or to place a tax on the industry through auctions. Now is the time for the US government to embrace Wi-Fi, argues McKinsey, and let inventiveness and not government diktat lead the way to solutions in the Internet age.
