In quest of a universal mailbox – Universal Messaging Interoperability Group – Brief Article

The Universal Messaging Interoperability Group (Umig) was quick to seize a perfect opportunity. When the group found out that both Voice ’94 and the EMA ’94 conferences were being held during the week of April 18th in Anaheim Calif., Umig decided to reschedule its February meeting and take advantage of the opportunity to get electronic mail (E-mail) and voice mail industry representatives under one roof. The goal? To get the representatives to discuss development of a universal mail box and a common universal directory.

“Both are having their major event at the same convention center at the same time,” said Dusty Sykes, Umig facilitator and president of Vanguard Communications Corp., Palo Alto, Calif. “We want to take advantage of that and get those communities talking to each other.”

Formed last November, Umig has been trying to get the E-mail and voice mail industries to provide users with the appearance of a single mailbox that stores multiple message types.
