6,000 Concurrent Users Connect With Online Access To A Vldb – Very Large DataBase

XIOtech Corporation, Eden Prairie, Minn., a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate Technology and a networked storage pioneer, along with PolyServe and Oracle have partnered to create a proof of concept for a Very Large DataBase (VLDB) running Oracle9i RAC on a Linux/Intel cluster. The database is the world’s largest of its kind and entails directly connecting 6,000 concurrent users with online access to a VLDB–a 10TB Order Entry and Product Tracking application.

The VLDB storage system consists of five XIOtech MAGNITUDE(TM) hardware platforms with four expansion cabinets connected to a Brocade(R) Fibre Channel fabric. PolyServe(TM) Matrix Server cluster file system and Matrix HA software are used to manage the cluster. A dual node Intel CPU server cluster running Red Hat(R) Linux(R) version 7.2 is used for the deployment.

Virtualization and advanced storage management tools are essential for administering real-world VLDBs. The MAGNITUDE is the only networked storage foundation designed from the ground up to include a virtualized storage architecture that makes application-driven storage possible. XIOtech’s REDI(TM) software harnesses all physical drive spindles within a MAGNITUDE into a dynamic virtual pool. The result is a networked storage foundation that scales easily to accommodate growing storage needs, and offers both redundancy and performance without complexity.

“XIOtech’s adaptive networked storage foundation architecture greatly simplifies the task of managing storage associated with a large Oracle9i database deployment,” said Dan McCormick, vice president of Worldwide Marketing, XIOtech. “The ability to effectively deploy and manage a VLDB requires storage that is flexible and easy to manage, and the MAGNITUDE not only meets these requirements but as the proof-of-concept demonstrates, exceeds them.”

In addition, XIOtech’s dedication and expertise with Oracle is further demonstrated by the introduction of XIOtech’s SANbuilder for Oracle Series. The SANbuilder for Oracle includes best-in-class professional services, storage hardware and software, training, support, and implementation guides to help ensure a successful deployment.

XIOtech’s SANbuilder is the first virtualized storage solution optimized for out-of-the-box use with specific enterprise applications. The SANbuilder series provides the fundamental benefits of a storage area network (SAN) and the unique capabilities of XIOtech’s MAGNITUDE hardware platform, married in meaningful ways to applications. Tightly coupling the storage architecture and applications means immediate benefits to the enterprise, including optimal functionality and low risk, with predictable installation time and expense. The foundation expands as more applications are brought in, but the basic configuration allows companies to reap the benefits of networked storage without having to hire storage experts, address unnecessary complexity, or spend millions of dollars.

The SANbuilder for Oracle is the third addition to a product family tailored to the unique storage requirements for specific applications and markets. XIOtech introduced the SANbuilder for Exchange Series in January 2002 and the SANbuilder for Healthcare Applications in June 2002.
