Kyocera, Brother prep new laser printers – Kyocera Electronics FS-3700+ monochrome laser printer, Brother International HL-2400C color laser printer – Product Announcement – Brief Article
While Kyocera Electronics Inc. is planning to introduce a new monochrome laser printer that will use the company’s “cartridge-free” technology, Brother International Corp. this month began shipping a new color laser printer.
Kyocera’s FS-3700+, which the company said it plans to show at next month’s CeBIT show in Europe, will replace the FS-3700, which the company introduced last year.
The new model will sport a 100-MHz PowerPC 603e processor and 3 Mbytes of RAM, the company said. In addition, the FS-3700+ will ship with PostScript Level 2. EtherTalk is a $295 option.
The device, which is based on Kyocera’s 600-dpi laser engine, will print 18 pages per minute. The FS-3700+ will be able to output at resolutions of up to 2,400 by 600 dpi using software interpolation, according to the company.
Kyocera said the printer will use a cartridge-free technology that will allow users to replenish toner cartridges without also replacing the cartridge drum and developer. Kyocera said this method means users will change the drum and developer components less frequently, resulting in a life span up to 30 times that of laser systems using traditional cartridges.
The FS-3700+ will be available in June for $1,495.
In other laser printer news, Brother this month shipped its HL-2400C, a color laser printer announced in November (see 11.24.97, Page 25). The $3,499 device can print 16 monochrome and 4 color pages per minute, and output color pages at 600 dpi and monochrome pages at 1,200 dpi, the company said.
A networkable version, the HL-2400CN, is expected to ship soon for about $4,000.
