HexMac to tie XPress, DHTML – HexMac Software Systems GmbH’s Challenger QuarkXTension – Product Announcement – Brief Article

Andrea Dudrow

HexMac Software Systems GmbH this month will release a QuarkXTension that the company said will allow QuarkXPress users to take advantage of cascading style sheets and dynamic HTML.

Code-named Challenger, the XTension will preserve XPress pages with an unlimited number of overlapping elements, HexMac said. It will output cascading style sheets that can be viewed with Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.

HexMac said any element on an XPress page can be converted to a DHTML animation using a time-line-based editor. Animation effects will include swipe, slide and fade. Behaviors can also be assigned to objects based on where the user’s mouse is positioned on a Web page, the company said. In addition, Challenger will be able to convert page elements into clickable pop-up windows.

Challenger will store JavaScript libraries outside an HTML page, which HexMac said will speed download times. The software will also take advantage of XPress master pages to establish Web site templates, the company said.

HexMac said it expects to release Challenger by the end of February for $349. The product will be available at http://sales.hexmac.com.
