Turbine and Midway Games to launch online Middle-earth

Details of ‘The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar’, a ‘massively multiplayer online game’ (MMOG) featuring creatures from JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, have been unveiled by game publishers Turbine Inc and Midway Games Inc.

The game, which is due to be launched on 24 April 2007, will enable fans from around the world to join the digital version of Middle-earth, interact with heroes such as Gandalf and take a virtual role in the War of the Ring.

Turbine, which holds a licence to Tolkien’s works, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, confirmed it is taking pre-orders for subscriptions. It will also enable the first players, know as ‘Founders’ to have early access to the game, entering on 30 March to create their own characters.

Players will be able to hire horses to travel around the digital land, and will be able to create a character based on any of the good races (humans, hobbits, elves and dwarves), but will not be able to take on one of the main roles.

Although some Tolkien fans have expressed opposition to the online game, reviewers claimed digital Middle-earth offers a graphically beautiful world with detailed architecture and landscapes, following a preview earlier this month.
