SecureTest warns of new phishing scam

UK-based penetration testing and security company SecureTest has warned Internet users of a new phishing scam that attempts to fraudulently obtain confidential information.

The fake e-mail tells recipients that their bank account has been debited for GBP1,099.99 and provides a link to check or cancel the order. Should the recipient follow the link they are directed to a web server that exploits a weakness in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to transfer a file to the user’s hard drive. This file is potentially dangerous and could reportedly be used for a range of criminal activities.

SecureTest has advised PC owners to protect themselves by ensuring that their antivirus solutions are up to date and they download the appropriate patch from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-013.mspx.
