Security solutions supplier mi2g has claimed that the Sasser worm has caused enough damage to be considered the fifth worst malware of all time.
All of the Sasser variants have reportedly caused between USD14.8bn and USD18.1bn worth of estimated damage worldwide.
The suspected virus writer – an 18-year-old student from Rotenburg – has been arrested after sources contacted Microsoft and asked if they would be given a cash reward if they testified against him. If the prosecution succeeds the informants are set to receive USD250,000 as a reward.
The most damaging virus of all time is still the MyDoom worm followed by NetSky, SoBig and Klez.
