Microsoft develops i2i system for online chatting

Software giant Microsoft Corp is reportedly developing a webcam system that will make it look like users are looking at each other while chatting even if they are looking at the screen.

The new system, called i2i, is to use a specific algorithm and two cameras to create a synthetic picture of the user, making it look like he or she is looking into the camera.

The researchers claim that the system will work in realtime and that a normal computer will be enough to run the technology which is the same as that used to create 3D images from the photographs sent from Mars by NASA robots, reported the Swedish online IT news service idg.se.

The system is apparently also able to create an alternative background.
