IDC reports rapid growth in Western European IP telephone shipments

Market intelligence and research company IDC has reported that its Western European IP Telephone Tracker has shown healthy growth in the region’s IP telephony market in the fourth quarter of 2004.

The fourth quarter saw a 14% rise in IP telephone shipments, with Cisco Systems gaining the biggest market share for the quarter, seeing its unit market share increase by 1.5% and revenue market share rising by 3.4%. Avaya gained the second biggest market share, with IDC saying that the company is now making significant inroads into the European IP market.

A spokesperson for IDC said that the latest results show that IP telephony is clearly now entering the mainstream, and that there was a significant growth in the market in the fourth quarter of 2004.
