UK telecomms group BT has revealed its new monitoring tool, VENUS, which it claims will identify viruses carried by e-mail which have currently remained undetectable by existing anti-virus systems.

VENUS (Viral Email Network Utilization Symptomiser) works by monitoring intranet e-mail for symptoms of any new or unknown viruses that have broken though traditional anti-virus systems, by identifying unknown behaviour and stopping their spread with the company network. The infected user will then be unable to send any more mail until the problem has been dealt with.

A spokesperson for BT said that it believes VENUS to be unique in its ability to detect dangerous viruses that infiltrate e-mail systems and stopping them, even if they have never been previously detected.
