Macintosh developer Apple Computer Corp has announced that it has sold over 70m songs via its iTunes online music store in its first year of operation.

Currently, around 2.7m songs are being downloaded each week.

When the site first launched songs could be downloaded from a selection of 200,000 tracks although that figure has now risen to 700,000. Plans are now underway to increase this amount even more so that visitors can choose from 1m songs by the end of the year.

To celebrate the second year of operation for iTunes Apple is offering a free song a day to its customers for eight days.

Songs are available on the web site for download for the price of GBP0.60.
