French telecomms company Alcatel SA and IT company Microsoft Corp have said that they will team up to develop Internet-based television services for telephone companies.

Microsoft has already announced that it will provide TV technology to the US telecomms group SBC Communications Inc. Telecomms companies are eager to exploit the use of the high-speed Internet to offer TV services, with several European telecomms providers – including Spain’s Telefonica and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom – having already introduced IPTV services.

A spokesperson for Alcatel said that it is committed to integrating its current video solutions into Microsoft’s TV IPTV Edition, to create a market leading integrated solution, reports The Associated Press.
