WITH THE RISE OF RECORDABLE CDS AND DVDS, we miss the simple convenience of disc labels that come with boxes of floppies. WriteAway Removable CD Labels ($12 for 20; 888-SMART58, www.digitalinnovations.com) give you a clever way to mark up your new removable media–for a price.
Each pack of WriteAway labels comes with a plastic applicator disc. You simply place your CD on the raised knob in the center. After placing your label sticky side up, put the knob in the CD’s hole and press firmly. The labels we tried were perfectly aligned, but we found it hard not to get fingerprints on the play side.
For the most part, we found the labels to be easily removable, though one of the 20 tore and left residue on the disc. Thankfully, this didn’t interfere with the data. There’s downloadable software available for printing on the labels with an ink-jet printer. We had some alignment problems but otherwise found it adequate.
