Getting SatisFAXtion
Intel’s SatisFAXtion, an affordable new entry into the easy-to-use fax/modem board market, lets you send a fax from your computer–from within an application–as easily as you send a file to your printer.
Fax boards are no longer new, but the SatisFAXtion unit sports some unique capabilities. Intel representatives claim that installation is as easy as popping off your PC cover and popping in the card. (This appeals to me, since I am squeamish about touching the insides of my CPU.)
In addition to being easy to install, the board is also relatively inexpensive. List price is $499 (street prices should be about $375 to $400). SatisFAXtion sends and receives faxes in the background, and the board’s fax-management software is Windows compatible. The software includes an on-line phone book, a transmission-time log, broadcasting and polling features, pop-up notification of arriving faxes, and a fill-in-the-blanks cover-sheet template. SatisFAXtion also includes a 2400-bps MNP 5 data modem and a gray-scale scanner port. Intel Corp. (408) 987-8080
