GLOSSARY OF FRANCHISING TERMS
Advertising fee. The advertising fee is typically based on a percentage of gross sales. The percentage is nearly always much smaller than for the royalty fee. Pooled with the advertising fees paid by other franchisees in the system and used to market the system. Decisions on usage normally shared by the franchisor and a franchisee advisory group.
Franchisor. The parent company that sells the franchise opportunity, collects royalties, and provides support to franchise units. Often owns and operates company-owned units under the same trade name used by individual franchise owners. For example, about one-third of McDonald’s restaurants are owned by McDonald’s.
Franchisee. Owner of a franchise.
Franchise fee. A sum of money paid by the franchisee to the franchisor. Paid before beginning operation of the franchise. Amount varies widely, but franchises within the same industry tend to stay competitive with each other. From the franchisor’s point of view, the fee covers the cost of finding the right franchisee as well as the cost of the franchisee’s initial training.
License. A term sometimes used for a franchise when the franchisor does not want to use the term “franchise.”
Minimum start-up costs. Covers all costs required to get a business off the ground, which includes franchise fee, materials, initial advertising, inventory, training, payroll, car leasing, and equipment. If you already own a full-fledged computer system, you may be able to get going for less than indicated in our listing. Some franchises offer financing and others help you obtain financing. The start-up costs represent what the franchisor considers the minimum amount required to get the business started.
Royalty. Ongoing fee paid by the franchisee to the franchisor, most often a percentage of gross sales, but sometimes a flat fee per month, flat amount per customer or transaction, or other arrangement for sharing sales with the franchisor in return for continued use of the business name, systems, and support.
When a franchisor conducts national marketing, it charges the franchisee an additional advertising royalty, generally no more than 2 percent of gross monthly sales.
