Japan, US, and Asian Firms to Deploy Undersea Fiber Optic Cable – Japan Telecom Co. and NTT Communications Corp – Brief Article
Japan Telecom Co. and NTT Communications Corp. will build an undersea fiber optic cable network linking the US, Japan, and East Asia jointly with five Asian and US telecom firms, the Japanese companies announced. The undersea cables — more than 30,000 km in length — are expected to go into operation in late 2002, officials of the Japanese partners said.
The new undersea cable will link the West Coast of the US, Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan. It will have a throughput of 5.12 Tbps (equivalent to 62 million telephone circuits) — among the world’s largest data transmission capacities. Investment in the project is likely to reach well over $1.5 billion.
