Kao infosystems closes plymouth facility, relocates six replication lines – Brief Article

Kao Infosystems Company has announced the June 1998 closing of its Plymouth, Massachusetts-based floppy disk and CD manufacturing and turnkey business. The company maintains three other U.S. facilities in Bothell, Washington, Fremont, California, and San Ramon, California. Equipment and other resources will be moved from Plymouth to these facilities as needed. Kao will also maintain existing facilities in Arnprior, Canada, and throughout Europe; the corporate offices remain in Plymouth.

Kao has also announced plans to relocate six CD/DVD replication lines to its Fremont facility. The six lines chosen to be relocated are all new technology lines and retro-fittable to DVD, which the company expects to be valuable as the necessity to add DVD capacity grows over the next six months. According to Understanding & Solutions Consultancy Services, the resulting 50 percent increase in replication capacity will make Kao the number two provider in DVD market share and number one in CD-ROM market share.
