Market Comment

CABLE STOCKS RISE — Buyers emerged in the tech sector Aug. 2, taking cable and telecom stocks into positive territory. The solid performance within technology also helped the Dow score respectable gains. The DJIA added 0.6%, and the Nasdaq rose 1.5%.

Cable companies that also saw slight gains included: Adelphia Communications, up 3.8%; Cox Communications, up 2.2%; Liberty Media Group, up 0.9%; Time Warner, up 0.1%; and USA Networks, up 0.6%.

BellSouth, Verizon, SBC Communications and AT&T all rose fractionally. Global Crossing was the best performer among big and mid-sized carriers, up 1.44 points. Lucent Technologies eked out a small gain of 0.44.
