Give your heart a break: Lose weight

The more you weigh, the harder your heart must work to pump blood through your body. The authors of Staying Young report new research that suggests being overweight may be even harder on younger hearts than older ones.

A study in the American Journal of Cardiology reports that obese men 45 and younger had three times greater incidence of hypertension than older men who were also overweight. Hypertension is a leading factor in heart attack and stroke. Staying within five pounds of your ideal body weight will pay big health dividends, says Dr. Bill Mallon.
