Tata Teleservices launches basic telephone services in Rajahmundry

Tata Teleservices, the private basic telephone service provider for Andhra Pradesh, announced the launch of its basic telephone services in Rajahmundry.

The roll out into the textile town is an important landmark in the Company’s roll out plans after successfully launching services in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam and Eluru. This is the sixth city where the Company has launched operations.

Tata Teleservices Limited will initially provide 2,500 wireline and an equal number of wireless connections in Rajahmundry. The Company will enhance capacity based on demand. It is using a combination of copper and OFC (optic fiber cable), which enables high quality voice and data transmission on its wireline connections. The Company has two CDMA cell sites covering all major commercial centers like Main Road, Station Road, Devi Chowk and Thotalakonda.

The Company plans to lay around 2,000 kilometers of OFC backbone, which will enable high-speed data transfer within the key cities of the State of which over 1,000 kilometers will be completed by December 2001. The backbone between Hyderabad and Vijayawada has been functional since August 31, 2001. The Company has over 96,000 customers across Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam and Eluru. The Company plans to invest an additional Rs 300 crore ($62 million) in Andhra Pradesh before the end of the current fiscal year. This will raise the Company’s total investment in the State to Rs 1,600 crore ($333 million). -(World IT Report)
