To the Max

Paul Bedard

Peter Max, the 1960s pop artist, is bringing President Clinton’s mom, the flamboyant Virginia Kelley, to canvas. Max tells Whispers that he’s featuring Bill’s mom in one of his famous multiple-panel portraits for unveiling at a White House tribute this summer. As a surprise gift, he’s also painting the famous photo of young Clinton shaking John F. Kennedy’s hand. What’s more, Max has agreed to raise money for and speak at the William Jefferson Clinton Cultural Campus in Hot Springs, Ark. In return, he’s been named the “official artist” of the artist colony and Clinton youth museum that was once the Hot Springs High School. Max has painted every president since Ford, but he says Clinton is “one of the greatest presidents ever.”
