Ichabods: Murphy pace red-hot offense

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — First halves have been a problem for Washburn. Looking to reverse that trend, the Ichabods couldn’t have started any better.

The Ichabods made their first six shots, five by Ryan Murphy, and turned in a blistering first half en route to an 85-61 romp over Central Missouri State in an MIAA game Saturday night.

“We had a great start, probably for the first time all year,” Murphy said. “We came out of the gate, ran our offense and played great defense.”

Murphy sank his first 10 shots, three of them 3-pointers, and finished 12-of-14 in a career-high 27-point night as the No. 11 Ichabods (12-3, 5-2 MIAA) remained unbeaten away from home.

“That’s pretty fair country shooting,” Washburn coach Bob Chipman said. “We got off to a great start and Murph really had it going. We haven’t been having enough fun, and tonight we did.”

Central Missouri came out in a zone and Murphy made the Mules pay. The 6-foot-6 junior stepped out to the left elbow of the zone and popped in shot after shot — five in a row, including two 3- pointers — to stake the Ichabods to a 12-6 lead.

“Our scouting report said they play man and zone, but we were expecting man,” Chipman said.

The Mules (9-6, 3-4) quickly got out of the zone, but the Ichabods kept it going against the man-to-man defense.

A steal by Shannon Kruger led to a 3-pointer in transition by John Crider, then two free throws by Jay Miller gave Washburn a 17-6 lead six minutes into the game. Mark DeBaun made a free throw for Central Missouri, then the Bods scored nine straight points for a 26-7 lead, which quickly became 31-10 with 8:30 left in the half.

The Ichabods cooled off a bit, while Vince Haynes and Tad Marquez got hot for the Mules, but Washburn ended the first half with a comfortable 43-25 advantage.

Murphy scored 16 points in a half, making all seven of his shots, and the Ichabods connected on 66.7 percent of their shots, sinking 16 of 24 (4 of 5 from 3-point range).

Murphy, who also had a team-high six rebounds, opened the second half just as he did the first, making three shots with one trey as the lead grew to 52-32.

“It’s been a long time since I shot like that,” said Murphy, who topped the 1,000-point plateau in his career. “I had good looks and and felt great. Carlo (Walton) was giving me the ball in great position. If I had missed those shots, Carlo would shoot me.”

Miller converted a three-point play when fouled scoring off an offensive rebound, Ryan Tomlins popped in a 3-point shot and Troy Douglas scored on a short jump hook and the Bods had their biggest lead of the game of 26 points at 60-34 with 13:47 left in the game.

Washburn “cooled off” in the second half to make only 14 of 29 shots (48 percent). Clifton finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds, Miller scored 10 and Walton matched his season-high with 8 assists along with 5 points and 3 rebounds.

Haynes and Phil Gettinger scored 14 points apiece for the Mules, who shot 37 percent for the game (6 of 25 treys).

Washburn plays archrival Emporia State on Wednesday at Lee Arena.
