4-H Jamboree

scheduled for Saturday

Shawnee County 4-H’ers will have a January Jamboree from 1 to 4 p.m. today at First Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1821 S.W. 37th St. Youths 4 to 12 will participate in crafts activities that include leather works, making bread animals, safety in flags and paperclip angels, painting, cookie decorating, making clay pot frogs, Valentine crafts and more.

Concert set

for Saturday

Born to Live, of Shawnee Mission, and Dave Arasmith, of Topeka, will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at the Adam’s Apple, 2622 S.E. 6th. Concessions will be available, and a freewill offering will be accepted.

Washburn faculty

to present recital

A piano trio by Shostakovich is one of the works to be featured at a recital by Washburn University faculty members at 3 p.m. Sunday in White Concert Hall at Washburn University. No admission is charged and the public is invited to attend.

The performers will be James Rivers, piano; Larissa Mitrophanova, violin; and Steven Elisha, violoncello. The program also will feature Piano Trio in E Flat, Opus 1, No. 1, by Beethoven, and Piano Trio in B major, Opus 8, by Brahms.

Girl Scouts to attend open house

Girl Scouts of Kaw Valley Council will attend an open house in the Wood Valley Racquet Club and Fitness Center, 2902 S.W. 37th, from noon to 3 p.m. today.

The event will teach the Scouts to the benefits of staying fit as well as the games of tennis and racquetball. Wood Valley staff will present information on nutrition, exercise, healthy living and the basics of cardio-kickboxing.

Free throw contest

to be staged

The Local Knights of Columbus will sponsor its annual Youth Free Throw Championship Sunday afternoon in the Washburn Rural High School gymnasium, S.W. 61st and Wanamaker Road.

The competition is open to all area youths 10 to 14. Every entrant is required to submit a copy of his or her birth certificate to attach to the registration form.

Participation is free. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. No additional entries will be accepted after 2:15 p.m.

Winners will advance to district and state competition. For an entry form or for more information, call Leo Henning, (785) 478- 0557.

Peace vigil planned

Topeka Friends Meeting will sponsor a Peace Vigil at noon Sunday on the south side of the Capitol. This silent vigil is open to all who have the desire for peace. Please call 357-1156 with questions. This vigil will continue on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Singles in Agriculture plan weekend events

The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will be in Topeka today and Sunday for entertainment and recreation.

The agenda includes tours of the Combat Air Museum and the Museum of History today, with a dinner and a dance this evening. A farewell breakfast will be Sunday morning.

Singles in Agriculture is an organization dedicated to promoting educational, recreational and social opportunities for singles who have an agricultural background or related occupation, as well to building new friendships.

Fund-raiser will place

a flag in your yard

The Highland Park Optimist Club is conducting a fund-raiser that offers a flag pole and flag installation in your yard for $50.

Proceeds will help fund Optimist Club service projects and youth activities.

Woman’s Day club

The Woman’s Kansas Day Club will have a meeting at 10 a.m. today at the Woman’s Club of Topeka Club House, 5221 S.W. West Drive.
