City Becomes Wi-Fi Wonderland

City Becomes Wi-Fi Wonderland

Lance Ulanoff

Quick, pack your bags and move the family on out to Chaska, Minnesota. Set close to the Minnesota River in Carver County, this city of around 20,000 will now have Wi-Fi Internet access in all corners of town.

Chaska’s Wireless Fidelity network will provide the Wi-Fi access as a municipal service (with technology partner Tropos Networks) to residents for just $16 a month. That puts the network in firm competition with commercially available broadband Internet access networks.

City managers are, oddly, predicting that just 2,000 of its residents will sign up for the service, but, according to an AP report, all the town’s law enforcement computers will also be upgraded to support wireless access.
