from an early morning thunderstorm

while fishing at East Matunuck

State Beach in Narragansett.

They were trying to find shelter

when they were hit, according to

media reports. One man, who

initially was in critical

condition, succumbed to his

injuries a couple of days

later. The other man was

treated for his injuries

and released from a local

hospital.

Service storm survey. Trees were

A 200-year old oak tree was

split in half and landed on two

cars. No injuries were reported.

The same storm also downed trees

in Cumberland.

Charley initially made

landfall on the west

coast of Florida between

Fort Myers and Tampa as

a category four hurricane.

The storm crossed Florida,

and exited the coast as a

category one. About 180,000 people

evacuated the Grand Strand as

Charley continued northeast, making

landfall again near Cape

Romain as a weak category

one hurricane with sustained

winds at 75 mph. It moved up

the coast and then inland

around Myrtle Beach. In

Horry and Georgetown

counties, insurance claims

totaled $5 million,

mostly along the Grand Strand.

There were downed trees, roof

damage, and flooding along the

coast in this area. 65,000

residents lost power, and the

estimate for Cleanup in Georgetown

county alone was $1.5 million. As

Charley moved Northeast, Brunswick

county was hit the hardest, with peak

winds around 85 mph. Damage was

extensive, with 2231 homes damaged, 231

with major damage, and 40 homes

destroyed in the county for a total of

$6.3 million. Many beach homes were

damaged, with 221 homes damaged at

Sunset Beach alone. Crop damaged in

Brumwick county was also widespread,

with 50 percent of the tobacco crop

lost and 30 percent of the corn and

field vegetables

destroyed. New Hanover

county was the next hardest hit,

with many business damaged in

Wilmington and surrounding

cities. The majority of the

county had power outages from

downed limbs on power lines.

Rainfall ranged from two inches

near the coast, to around four

inches from eastern Bladen county,

south through Columbus county.

Vegetative debris was widespread,

plugging storm drains and

contributing to ponding and

flooding the next day. Storm

surge was minimal, with some

minor overwash. Thankfully,

only a few minor injuries

were reported.

Gaston made landfall the morning

of the 29th as a tropical storm

in Charlestown county SC. The

storm movcd north, through

Georgetown, Williamsburg, and

Florence counties. Gaston

weakened to a tropical

depression that night as it

moved into Marion

county and the remnants moved

to Dillon county the morning

of the 30th. Rainfall was the

main element of the storm,

with the heaviest swath of

precipitation from Williamsburg

county, through Florence and

Darlington counties. Around

five inches of rainfall on

average occurred in this

area with over ten inches of

rain in the Kingstree area in

Williamsburg county. Flash flooding

was reported in Lake City and in

Darlington during the late

afternoon and evening. Many roads

were flooded and closed in

Kingstree, Greeleyville, and

Hemingway. Front street in

Georgetown was also closed.

A tornado watch was issued,

with one confirmed tornado

near Wallace in Marlboro

county. In North Carolina,

rainfall ranged from around

an inch near the coast, to near

five inches in Robeson county,

with street flooding. The winds

associated with Gaston were not

much of a factor, with the peak

wind of 58 mph recorded at the

Springmaid pier in Myrtle Beach.

There were numerous limbs down,

with some minor power outages.

There was minor beach erosion

reported at Bald Head Island

and on the east side of Ocean

Isle Beach. The effects of

Gaston were felt weeks after,

with widespread river flooding

over the entire area. The

Lumber river at Lumberton had record

flooding, with a crest nearly

eight feet above flood stage.

There were several evacuations

of homes in the Quinby area,

and some flooding of farmlands

in Pee Dee.

The highest wind gusts were 63 mph

Beach, and 51 mph in downtown

Charleston. Numerous trees and large

limbs were knocked down in northern

Charleston county and eastern Berkeley

county. Storm surge was estimated at 4

to 6 feet over northern Charleston

county from Oyster Landing to the Cape

Romain Wildlife Refuge.

county for several hours dumping an

estimated 6 to 10 inches of rain on

Sullivan’s Island, the Isle of Palms,

and Mount Pleasant. Numerous roads

were flooded and retention ponds

overflowed into streets. Several homes

and businesses were flooded.

Gaston persisted all day causing

significant flooding across the

county. Radar estimated up to 15

inches of rain fell in the St. Stephen

area with much of the rest of the

county receiving an estimated 6 to 12

inches of rain. Numerous roads were

flooded across the county. Twenty

structures sustained major damage or

were destroyed by flooding. Dozens

of structures sustained minor damage.

Numerous evacuations and road closures

occurred in the northern part of the

county.

The center of Tropical Storm Gaston

came ashore near Bulls Bay with

sustained 70 mph winds around 930 am

on August 29th. The center moved

through northern Charleston county

into eastern Berkeley county that

afternoon. Maximum wind gusts were 81

mph at the Isle of Palms, 73 mph at the

East Cooper Airport in Mount Pleasant,

59 mph at Pineville, 55 mph at the

Charleston Airport, 51 mph at Folly

Beach, and 48 mph in Downtown

Charleston. Wind damage occurred in

Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester

counties with the most widespread and

significant damage occurring in

northern Charleston county and in

Berkeley county.

The winds knocked down numerous trees

and large limbs resulting in major

damage and the destruction of 8

structures in Charleston county. Over

3000 structures in the 3 counties

sustained minor damage. Damage to

structures included shingles, siding,

gutters, and broken windows. Trees and

limbs also fell onto vehicles resulting

in damage. There was also damage to

power lines and poles, fences, signs,

and mail boxes.

At the height of the storm, over

150,000 people were without power. A

few power outages occurred in

Dorchester county, but most of the

power outages were in northern

Charleston county and the northern and

eastern parts of Berkeley county.

Total storm damage estimates were 7.6

million dollars in Charleston county

and around 9 million dollars in

Berkeley county.

The maximum storm surge associated

with Gaston was estimated to be 4 to

4.5 feet in Bulls Bay.

structure destruction from southwest

Corson county across northern Dewey

county. Crop losses were extensive in

a wide band from north of Isabel to

south of Timber Lake. Many vehicles,

windows, siding, and roofs were

damaged by the large hail. Many trees

were stripped of their leaves with

countless branches and trees downed.

Some power lines and poles were also

downed causing power outages. At a

farm southwest of Timber Lake, half

the roof was torn off of an 80 foot

barn and two tractors were damaged.

The hail piled up to 6 to 10 inches on

Highway 20 west of Timber Lake. Due to

the slippery conditions, some vehicles

slid into the ditch. Snowplows were

dispatched to clear the roads.

Winds around 100 mph were measured by

public wind equipment on the west edge

of Fort Pierre. The damage from the

winds mainly occurred from South

Dakota Highway 1806 south to Fort

Pierre. Some storage sheds were blown

over, skirting was blown off of many

trailer houses, and many trees,

branches, and power lines along with

some poles were downed. The roofs on

at least 50 homes and businesses were

damaged in Fort Pierre with one house

losing a large part of it’s roof. Also

in Fort Pierre, two light poles were

downed, some business signs were

damaged or destroyed, a trailer of a

traveling harvest group was tipped

over, and 11 of 14 doors on a storage

facility were blown out.

closures. A nine-mile stretch of

Interstate 35 was closed by Texas DOT,

Salle county line, due to flooded

sections. Evacuations occurred in

northwest La Salle county. Two

residents were evacuated by jet ski

and three by helicoptor, along a

flooded Mustang Creek near Millet.

Rainfall was so heavy that water

covered portions of IH-35 from south

of Pearsall well into LaSalle County.

This unprecedented level of flooding

kept the interstate highway closed for

12 hours.

County during the late evening of the

6th. This storm resulted in a large

swath of damaging hail ranging in size

from quarters to baseballs. Most of the

damage was restricted to cotton crops

from the Lynn/Dawson county line near

Grandview. A survey by the Dawson

County Agricultural Extension Agent

concluded that over 5,000 acres of

cotton were lost. The storm weakened

before crossing U.S. Highway 87 at

Arvana where it produced only pea size

hail.

reported flash flooding that resulted

in high water running through several

city streets. Deputies closed some

streets with barricades. A complex of

strong to severe thunderstorms tracked

from the Texas south plains into the

northeastern Permian Basin during the

late evening of the 6th. The southern

storm of the linear complex was an

intense high precipitation supercell.

This storm produced a swath of very

large and damaging hail. Thunderstorms

and heavy rainfall also resulted in

flash flooding in Snyder.

hours, a small cluster of multicell

thunderstorms moved southeast over the

southern Permian Basin. One of these

Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall moved

over the Davis Mountains and Big Bend

during the evening hours. Several waves

of storm activity over northern

Brewster County resulted in localized

flash flooding.

reported 60 MPH winds in Pecos. A

National Weather Service rainfall

observer reported that a large tree was

blown down by the severe thunderstorm

winds. A bow-shaped linear complex of

thunderstorms that produced widespread

wind damage across southeastern New

Mexico propagated southeast across the

Upper Trans Pecos region of west Texas

around midnight CST on the 12th.

Although damage reports were likely

limited by the rural and largely

unpopulated nature of the area, several

large trees were blow down and at least

one light structure sustained damage.

radio station reported a swath of

nickel size hail from U.S. Highway

90/67 west of Alpine to State Highway

118 south of the city.

of the 14th when heavy rainfall

resulted in the most significant

flooding along Alpine Creek in thirty

Department barricaded city streets at

several low water crossings at 14:15

CST due to flash flooding. Shortly

before 1600 CST Alpine Creek began to

overflow its banks, and washed away the

police barricades. During the next half

hour, residents were evacuated from

several homes along the creek as flood

waters continued to rise.

north of Fort Stockton. A cluster of

strong to severe thunderstorms

developed over the Davis and Glass

Mountains during the afternoon of the

14th. One storm produced nickel size

hail near Alpine. Heavy rainfall

associated with the thunderstorm

activity also produced significant

flash flooding along Alpine Creek in

Alpine. Local officials called it the

worst flooding to affect the city in

thirty years. Flash flooding also

resulted in road closures across parts

of Pecos County.

Reeves and Jeff Davis Counties reported

dangerous conditions due to street

flooding.

of Loraine. Strong thunderstorms

affected the northern and eastern

Permian Basin of west Texas during

the late afternoon and evening of the

18th. These storms produced very

heavy rainfall at some locations. A

Mitchell County resident measured 4.8

inches of rain that fell in a short

time south of Loraine. Flash flooding

made local roads and highways

impassable across portions of Martin

and Mitchell Counties.

convection back built into the

southeastern Permian Basin from the

west-central Texas area near San

Angelo along and north of a stalled

frontal boundary. This was first of

several waves to affect the west

Texas Permian Basin and the Trans

Pecos region during an extensive

severe weather episode. Pea to

quarter size hail was first reported

at the Cope Ranch in rural

northeastern Reagan County.

damage around the fire station. A

large wooden swing and jungle gym unit

Reagan County and moved north across

eastern Glasscock County. This storm

produced penny size hail over State

Highway 158 just east of Garden City.

convective development continued to

increase towards the northwest. A

severe thunderstorm rapidly developed

over Andrews and produced hailstones

ranging in size from nickels to

golfballs. No damage was reported.

large hail in Andrews west of U.S.

was described as “mushy” and

disintegrated upon impacting the

ground.

houses in parts of the city and

caused structural damage. In

addition, fire department officials

Pecos County on the evening of the

21st, and the most destructive storm

of the event, developed over the

northern parts of the county and

propagated south-southwest toward

Fort Stockton. A rural resident

reported three-quarter inch hail

north of the city. The Texas

Department of Public Safety reported

nickel size hail at mile marker 254 on

Interstate 10 as the core of the

storm passed just west of Fort

Stockton. Quarter size hail fell at

the municipal airport located just

west of the city.

at the Lynbaugh Texas Department of

Corrections Unit. The tornado was

the damaging winds that destroyed a

large hay barn and severely damaged a

home on the property. The hail was

responsible for additional damage to

significant crop damage at Belding

Intense rear flank down draft winds

developed along the southwest and

west flank of the storm as it

propagated south of Interstate 10.

These winds destroyed two large hay

barns on adjacent ranches between

Belding and Fort Stockton, subjecting

the hay to rain and causing a total

loss. Debris from the tin roof of one

barn was blown into a nearby

homestead. Power poles and lines were

snapped as the debris slammed into

the house causing structural damage

and killing a cow.

in Lea County, New Mexico, moved east

across western Gaines County. This

was the second severe storm to affect

the county within an hour. Goltball

size hail was reported on U.S.

A section of U.S. Highway 62/385 was

closed when flash flooding resulted

in high water flowing over the

highway. A stalled frontal boundary

ignited a round of significant severe

weather across the west Texas Permian

Basin and Upper Trans Pecos during

the afternoon and evening of the

21st. Convection initially developed

over west-central Texas. This activity

back built into the southeastern

Permian Basin. As the afternoon

progressed, development quickly

increased northwest along the frontal

boundary. Storms that developed over

much of the Permian Basin were

largely elevated and multicell in

nature and produced large hail and

damaging winds along with very heavy

rainfall. Several storms that

developed south of the front

organized into classic supercells. One

storm resulted in at least two

tornadoes and extensive wind and hail

damage over central Pecos County. By

the conclusion of the event during the

late evening hours, almost $2 million

of property and agricultural damage

had occurred across the region.

convection erupted over the west Texas

Permian Basin during the afternoon of

the 30th. Several storms became severe

with organized multicell structures

the dominant mode for convection. One

relatively long-lived thunderstorm

propagated southwest across Scurry and

Borden Counties. This storm produced

a swath of large hail that damaged

pecan trees. Another well-organized

storm produced golfball size hail over

U.S. Highway 385 in northern Crane

County. This storm remained

stationary over the highway for nearly

an hour, and resulted in flash

flooding along the steep terrain of

the Caprock Escarpment.
