Scott, Eugenie. “Not (Just) in Kansas Anymore.” Science, 288:813-814, May 5, 2000. Science and Society Essay about the latest neocreationist tactic, to balance evolution with “evidence against evolution.” Notes Scott, “Scientists unfamiliar with such ‘evidence’ soon discover that evidence against evolution is just a euphemism for creation science.” She discusses the latest campaigns against evolution teaching in the United States, its historical and religious roots, and the newest creationism movement, “Intelligent design creationism,” which stresses existential issues and claims that if evolution is true there is a substantial price to pay in loss of purpose and meaning of life. Scott says IDC appeals to non-literalist Christians and is being promoted to intellectuals and to school boards for inclusion in the science curriculum “without having contributed anything substantial to our understanding of science or philosophy of science.” She calls on scientists and educators to oppose antievolutionism. Otherwise , support for good science will be weakened and scientific literacy will be further reduced.
