Canadian comms fit for Venezuelan frigates

DRS Technologies of Ontario, Canada, has been awarded a subcontract by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding to supply centralized communications systems for the ongoing modernization of two Italian-built Mariscal Sucre-class frigates of the Venezuelan Navy. DRS will supply its Shipboard Integrated Communications (SHINCOM) 2100 system, developed initially for the Canadian Forces and currently installed in the Nimitz-class nuclearpowered aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

SHINCOM features a highly reliable dual homing architecture, with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software for integrated centralized shipboard communications. The system’s ability to access integrated radio and internal circuits, combined with its extensive secure conference network, provides what is claimed to be an affordable and comprehensive solution for “technology migration” into the next century. Its proven operational performance is adaptable to a wide range of ship types.
