Rivers of change; essays on early agriculture in eastern North America
Rivers of change; essays on early agriculture in eastern North America. (Reprint, 1992)
Smith, Bruce D.
U. of Alabama Press
An archaeologist at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, Smith adds a new introduction to his study first published in 1992 and 2002 (paper) by the Smithsonian Institute Press. There he notes recent works and answers critics of his assertion that eastern North America was an independence center of plant domestication. The work looks at evidence for pre-maize agriculture at various sites with various plants, and proposes a chronology from foragers before 5050 BC to the introduction of maize after AD 1150.
