Do deer make noises?
Melanie Histand; Goshen, IN
Although deer are usually silent, they can make a bunch of different sounds. They snort and grunt. And fawns can even mew and whine! Each sound sends a different message from one deer to another.
A mother deer may make a short, low grunt when she’s looking for her fawn. “Mew, mew (I’m over here),” the fawn may answer. And in mating season, a male deer may call to females with a long grunt.
Deer also make thumping sounds with their feet. This sends the message to other deer that danger is nearby.
