Vegan’s bad rap

Vegan’s bad rap

Amy Joy Lanou

I am troubled by the headline “Vegan Diet Bad for Baby” (August 2003), when vitamin B12 deficiency is really the issue. Such deficiency in infants can be serious, and it is becoming more common among infants of vegan and vegetarian as well as meat-eating parents. All pregnant women should be vigilant about taking proper prenatal vitamins. Families who adopt vegan or vegetarian diets generally take in much higher levels of important vitamins and minerals.

It would be a shame for readers to dismiss a vegan diet when, in fact, this eating pattern offers significant protection from many health complications.
