THE MIRACLES OF MENTORING Broadway Books, $11.95 100 Black Men of America, a nonprofit mentoring group, aspires “to help as many young people as possible to benefit from having someone to look up to.” In his new book, Thomas W. Dortch Jr., president of the organization, seems equally intent on promoting both the organization and mentoring. Nevertheless he cites evidence that mentoring does work–mentored children are more likely to do well in school, pursue postsecondary education and stay off drugs–and attempts to offer “sensible, practical advice on all aspects of mentoring.”
