Dear reader

Margo Howard

With regard to my mother, Ann Landers, being “late” in making things better for homosexuals (“Dear Reader, Get a Life!” August 2003): Apparently, she wasn’t that late, because Bruce Vilanch and Dan Savage, along with many other gay leaders, wrote me when she died saying that the gay community had lost a great friend–and that it was she who made it “safe” for them by getting the message into middle-class homes that they were just like us, only wired differently in terms of sexual instinct.

Great job on the August issue. In “Dear Reader” the same answer–but with different tones–from the advice-givers was a great stroke.
