Hospital videotaping approved

It is permissible for hospitals, mental health facilities, nursing homes, and similar treatment centers to film or videotape patients during emergencies, according to the major accrediting organization

The Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations in a revised standard released this year says that institutions should procure the consent of the patient or next-of-kin before videotaping, but if that is not possible because a patient is unable to give consent, the videotaping may still be conducted so long as the tape is sequestered until informed consent is obtained. www.jcaho. org.
