California’s long reach
Those who advised companies that California’s new law restricting businesses’ use of Social Security numbers to identify their customers [see PJ Nov 02] are right. Attorney General Bill Lockyer is investigating whether Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest student-loan company, is violating the 2001 law by sending Social Security numbers through the mail to its California borrowers.
