Did you know that…?
Physicians do not always make work-related issues a part of medical historytaking
Did You Know That…? According to the American Skin Association, of the more than 500,000 work-related illnesses, 45 percent of them are occupational skin diseases (SkinFacts, Fall 2000). The most common one, says Steven R. Cohen, M.D., a leading dermatologist and expert in the field, is the inflammatory skin condition known as contact dermatitis, caused by exposure to an offending irritant. Other workplace-associated conditions include acne (when hair follicles become clogged by certain agents), vitiligo (when toxins affect pigment cells) and cancer (due to exposure to carcinogens). So the next time you consult your family physician or dermatologist about skin troubles, be sure to detail your occupation and any hazards and safety concerns.
