UTMB nurses are members of an interdisciplinary health care team, where the nursing focus is moving toward primary accountability for patient care. Nurses have the opportunity to stay at the bedside and to advance through the Clinical Ladder Program. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and individualized orientation that prepares you to fulfill role responsibilities. A competency-based approach utilizes the performance-based development system to assess your critical thinking, interpersonal, and technical abilities. Once baseline information is obtained, feedback is provided to you, your nurse manager, and your preceptor, and an individualized orientation program is planned and designed to help ensure your success on the job.
Availability for shift rotation is required, although nurses choose permanent evening or night assignments. Several patient care areas and all intensive care units are on 12-hour shifts.
With more than 100 years of progressive nursing education to its credit, UTMB offers a multitude of continuing educational opportunities to complement our exciting and challenging work environment.
UTMB features, four separate schools, including Texas’ oldest school of nursing, whose RN to BSN Flexible Option Track is geared to meet the educational needs of RNs. The Master’s Degree program offers four majors: acute care nurse practitioner, primary care nurse practitioners (with four specialty tracks), nurse midwifery, and nursing administration. One hundred percent reimbursement of in-state tuition is available to full-time employees. UTMB supports its nurses in completion of degree requirements through the Work/School Programs (RN to BSN and BSN to MSN).
UTMB offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and education as well as excellent 1st Day Benefits. Liberal shift differentials and on-call pay are also available in designated areas. Employees can choose from various health and dental insurance plans. Other benefits include vision insurance, life insurance, deferred compensation, long-term disability insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, tax-sheltered annuities, credit union membership, and a retirement program.
