AST UK Intros Ascentia 900N Notebook PC 07/20/94 BRENTFORD, MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND, 1994 JUL 20 (NB) — AST Europe has unveiled the Ascentia 900N “high performance” notebook PC in the UK. The company claims that the machine has the largest screen available on a portable — either a 10.3 super twist nematic (STN) dual scan or a 10.4-inch thin film transistor (TFT) active matrix color screen.

Other features of the machine include a choice of 50 megahertz (MHz) 486DX2 or 75MHz DX4 processors, a new nickel metal-hydride battery pack that provides between four and eight computing hours, plus a Smartpoint trackstick built into the middle of the keyboard.

“We’ve continuously set new notebook standards for the industry and the Ascentia 900N is now exception. As notebooks become increasingly powerful, more and more people are using them as their primary computing. Ascentia provides our customers not only the power to work on the road, but a total solution that includes comms, connectivity and expandability options, allowing them easily to keep in touch with the office,” he said.

In the UK, the Ascentia series comes with a removable hard disk plus a three-year worldwide warranty. Four machines are initially available: the 4/50 CS10/340 with 4MB RAM, 50MHz processor, 10.3-inch color screen and 340MB hard disk; the CT9/340, same specifications but with a nine-inch mono screen; the 4/75 CS10/340, with 4MB RAM, 75MHz processor, 10.4-inch color screen and 340MB hard disk; and the 4/75 CT10/510, with the same specifications, but with a 10.4 TFT color screen and 540MB hard disk.

Depending on the model, the 900N tips the scales between 6.6 and 6.9 pounds. Optional extras include a PowerStation docking station, EasyPort port replicator, drive bay adapter, and PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) enhancement cards. Pricing on the machines ranges from UKP2,695 to UKP4,695.
