Macy’s will return to New Orleans in 2007

The banner outside Macy’s in The Esplanade mall claims the store will return in the fall of 2006, but Macy’s officials say the store will not be returning until at least 2007.

As we have stated previously, we’re not planning on reopening in 2006, said Macy’s spokeswoman Ellen Fruchtman. We’re targeting 2007 and taking our time to look at the position of the store in the market. We’re taking our time to do it right.

Macy’s in The Esplanade and the Macy’s in the three-story New Orleans Shopping Centre closed after Hurricane Katrina.

Macy’s will not return to the New Orleans Centre on Poydras Street because there are plans to demolish the defunct mall to build a Jazz Park.

However, The Esplanade mall is still open and sales continue to trend upward, said marketing director Anne Reed,

Fruchtman said the intention is to reopen Macy’s in The Esplanade but could not confirm if a second store would open in the New Orleans area.

I can’t speculate if it will be one store or two stores (reopening), Fruchtman said. As you’re aware, so much of the population has shifted and we want to position our stores where the customers shop. Right now we’re looking at the total market.
