NFCU President Brian McDonnell, honored as NSCS distinguished alumnus – From the Schoolhouse – Navy Federal Credit Union, Navy Supply Corps School
Brian L. McDonnell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU), was recently inducted as the 26th Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) Distinguished Alumnus. The NSCS Commanding Officer CAPT Bob Monette, presented McDonnell his award during a ceremony held in George Auditorium.
McDonnell served four years on active duty in the Supply Corps retiring as a captain in the Naval Reserve after 24 years of service. After graduating from the Navy Supply Corps School Basic Qualification Course (BQC) in June 1966, he served aboard USS Davis (DD 937) and as the Head of the Financial Management Division of Naval Command System Support Activity (NAVCOSSACT) in the Washington Navy Yard.
His reserve tours included Naval Supply Systems Command, Naval Material Command, Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Regional Contracting Center, and four years on the staff of the Inspector General of the Navy.
McDonnell received his bachelor’s degree from Scranton University and his master’s degree in business from George Washington University.
In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities as President and Chief Executive Officer of NFCU, he is also Treasurer of Navy Federal’s Board of Directors. Today, NFCU is the world’s largest credit union with 4,000 employees, $17 billion in assets, and 2.2 million members.
During his 32 years with Navy Federal, he has served in various other capacities. From November 1994 to April 1996, he was the senior executive vice president, serving as the principal assistant to the president. Prior to that, he was responsible for directing Navy Federal’s Mortgage Department and served as executive vice president of Navy Federal’s other major operating department, where he had responsibility for consumer lending, credit cards, and branch office operations.
McDonnell is a member of the Board of Directors for both the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Mutual Insurance Society. He is on the Board of Directors of the Consumer Federation of America and serves on the Filene Research Institute’s Research Council. He is also chairman of the Board of Directors of Navy Federal Financial Group, Navy Federal’s Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), which offers insurance and investment services to its customers.
The Navy Supply Corps School Distinguished Alumni Program was created by the Navy Supply Corps Association in 1989 and became a function of the Navy Supply Corps Foundation when it merged with the association in 1995. The objective of the program is to recognize a select group of former Supply Corps officers who have distinguished themselves both on active duty and in their follow-on careers in the private and public sectors.
