City attorney reviews off-duty lieutenant’s crash

The city attorney’s office is reviewing a traffic accident Saturday in which an off-duty police lieutenant reportedly sideswiped another car, causing a crash that seriously injured the driver.

Police reports show Lt. Robert Surdyk, who was driving a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass, struck a 1983 AMC Eagle while changing lanes on Layton Ave. near S. 10th St.

The collision caused the westbound AMC on the left of Surdyk’s Oldsmobile to lose control on the icy road and crash head- on into a railroad bridge abutment, causing injuries to the driver and a passenger.

The driver of the AMC, John A. Vallee, 37, of Milwaukee, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Doyne Hospital in Wauwatosa. He suffered serious injuries to his legs and chest, a family member said.

Vallee’s passenger, Dean Polaske, 19, of Milwaukee, suffered injuries that were not as serious.

No citations were issued in the incident. It is common for the city attorney’s office to review traffic crashes in which serious injury is involved, to determine whether citations should be issued.

Surdyk, 46, heads the Avenues West police station, a community policing post near Marquette University.
