Shrub needs shade

Boxwoods thrive in high shade — the bright but indirect light under tall trees. The leaves will burn or “bronze” if plants are exposed to too much direct sun, and they are particularly sensitive to bright winter sunlight. Boxwoods should also be protected from drying winter winds.
Boxwoods grow slowly but surely. Some plants grow only a half- inch a year, some three or four times that. Small plants will adjust to conditions in your garden more readily than large ones and grow more quickly.
Gardeners in mild climates can plant boxwoods in spring or fall. In cold-winter areas, it’s probably best to plant in spring, so you can pamper your plants all season while they settle in.
Plant them in well-drained soil, mulch with about an inch of compost to keep the roots cool, and keep the plants moist (but not wet) while they become established.
