High efficiency motors: Your profit driver

High efficiency motors: Your profit driver

A COUNTRY’S energy efficiency can be measured by the energy intensity of

its economy. In Malaysia, it is increasing, while for many other

countries, it is decreasing. This, in a situation of increasing

globalisation, is a worrying trend that the Government seeks to reverse

with energy efficiency measures.

As the regulator and policy maker of the nation’s energy industry,

Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), or Energy Commission, recognises the important

role of energy efficiency in the nation’s future industrial landscape and

has identified the promotion of High Efficiency Motors (HEMs) as the first

priority for the industrial sector in Malaysia. Thus, it is driving the

use of HEMs by Malaysian manufacturers with a six-month-long campaign –

`HEM: Your Profit Driver’.

Studies conducted by ST have indicated a lack of awareness among the

majority of industrial users of the profit potential of HEMs. With the

campaign, ST aims to raise awareness of the benefits of HEMs among

industrial users, especially the medium and large industries – the section

of users that consumes the most amount of electricity in the nation.

To be launched on May 10, 2005, by ST Chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Annas Mohd

Nor, the industry-specific awareness campaign will consist of a series of

seminars, press releases and articles in national newspapers and industry

magazines, mini exhibitions, distribution of brochures as well as a

website, www.hem2profit.com.my, which will act as a repository for

campaign and HEM-related information.

The seminars series for users and consultants/motor suppliers’

representatives will be conducted in major industrial areas of Malaysia,

including the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan and Kota

Kinabalu. These seminars will address relevant issues regarding HEMs and

the benefits companies will enjoy from cost savings through various

government incentives. Empiricial results from actual case studies will

also be shared during these seminars to demonstrate the real gains from

using HEMs.

Two exhibitions will also be held in conjunction with Metaltech 2005

(May 11-15) at the Putra World Trade Centre, and ASEAN Elenex (July 20-23)

at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The HEM campaign is the result of collaborations between the Energy

Commission and various organisations, including MIDA, the Federation of

Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (PTM) and a host of

other professional and trade organisations, and not forgetting the major

motor suppliers. Please check out the venues and dates on

www.hem2profit.com.my or look out for more information in major

newspapers.
