“Jorge Gestoso leaves CNN”
> Jorge Gestoso, the award winning, internationally known journalist that has fronted CNN en Espanol for the past 16 years, announced on May 4, 2004 that he is leaving CNN when his contract expires at the end of May.
Gestoso, who’s been often compared to ABC’s Peter Jennings, is the only original employee still working for CNN’s Spanish division, which began operations in May 1988. Since then, he has been the face most associated with CNN en Espanol.
Gestoso covered major events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including: on-site reporting of the fall of the Berlin Wall; the Gulf War; key moments of the Middle East peace process from Madrid and Washington, D.C.; the crisis in Iraq from Kuwait and Jordan; and the Russian elections from Moscow.
Among other broadcasting awards, most recently Gestoso was honored with the Spanish-language Television Industry Award (INTE) for Best Male News Personality; Most Outstanding Male Anchor, Best Anchor on Spanish Language Television and the Jean Cartier Award.
Gestoso, who is originally from Montevideo and attended the University of Uruguay there, has yet to make public his plans for the future.
