Arizona: Auto theft continues at naton’s no. 1 level

ACROSS THE STATES

Auto theft rose enough in major metropolitan areas last year to maintain Arizona as the state with the highest per capita rate.

The Arizona Automobile Theft Authority reported more than 100 cars were stolen every day in 2001. To address the crime, the authority is offering steering wheel locks free to the first 15,000 car owners that request them.

The giveaway is part of $236,000 in public awareness grants to law enforcement agencies. The state charges a fee to insurance companies to finance the program.
