U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted clearance to market the HealtheTech MedGem[TM] device, a handheld, portable indirect calorimeter intended for use in clinical and research applications to measure oxygen uptake. The MedGemdevice Accurately measures respiratory airflow and oxygen uptake (also referred to as oxygen consumption, [VO.sub.2]) and determines resting metabolic rate (RMR), the number of calories a person burns per day at rest. The MedGem Indirect Calorimeter is the first handheld device for nutrition monitoring and is based on proprietary technologies protected by issued and pending patents.
