Abstract

The 2006 bibliography lists books and articles related to engineering technology education under the following headings: administration, aerospace, architectural, assessment, biomedical/biotechnology, civil, computers, curriculum, distance education, diversity, electrical/electronics, faculty development, industrial, industry/government/ employers, information technology, instructional technology, international, laboratories, liberal studies, manufacturing, mechanical, nuclear, teaching methodology, tech prep, technical communication, and technical graphics. Five categories-instructional technology, liberal studies, teaching methodology, technical communication, and technical graphics-include listings reflecting general technical education concerns.

Entries are listed according to area of primary emphasis, and items that apply to two or more academic disciplines are included under the area of major interest. For example, ECET-related papers are included under “Electrical/Electronics”; mechatronics papers are listed under “Mechanical.” Our apologies are offered for any entries that may have been missed or inadvertently placed in the wrong category.

Introductory Remarks

Since this year marks the 20th anniversary of the ETE Bibliography, it seems fitting to provide a little historical context and comment on the role of the bibliography.

The bibliography is the brainchild of Frank Gourley, recently retired as division director for engineering technology at West Virginia Institute of Technology and longtime chair of the ETC Publications Committee. The initial impetus was to collect the scholarship of engineering technology in a central repository and improve the visibility of engineering technology within ASEE, but another purpose has evolved over the years: the publication now serves as a research aid for the engineering technology community. The first bibliography was published in the April/May 1987 edition of Engineering Education; it was a modest five pages and included 137 entries.

When ASEE reorganized its publications in 1992, the bibliography migrated to the fournal of Engineering Technology, where it has been a standard feature of the fall issue.And it has grown in size, reflecting both the increase of scholarship in the field and additional publication outlets as a result of the explosion of the Internet; the last published version, in fall 2006, had 750 entries and ran for 12+ pages.

The bibliography offers a snapshot of annual scholarship, but, seen over a 20-year span, it also reflects the trends and concerns of the engineering technology community. While articles regarding electronic technologies, for example, have quadrupled, some issues remain relatively stable, including the status of technology compared to engineering and the challenges of diversity, promotion, tenure, accreditation, and, most recently, globalization. Overall, the engineering technology community seemed to be actively and energetically pursuing answers to questions at the heart of its mission: Who are we? How can we grow professionally? How can we better understand, support, and educate our students?

As one of the original bibliography crew, I have been privileged to watch the field of engineering technology develop its scholarship, and, as a liberal arts person, I have learned a great deal about factors which define the physical quality of my life. I appreciate the good spirits with which contributors have tolerated my ignorance of things technical, and thank you all for being so welcoming to a non-technical person in your midst.

Acknowledgments

The bibliography is a special project of the Publications Committee of ASEE’s Engineering Technology Council. Our thanks to the many engineering technology professionals who took time from their busy schedules to contribute their publication listings.

Marilyn Dyrud is a full professor in the Communication Department at Oregon Institute of Technology. She regularly teaches classes in business and technical writing, public speaking, rhetoric, ethics, technical editing, and desktop publishing, and is part of the faculty team for the Civil Engineering Department’s integrated senior project.

Marilyn is active in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) as her campus’s representative, as the Engineering Technology Division (ETD) section representative, and as past chair for the Pacific Northwest section. She has presented papers at ASEE annual conferences since 1986, and has compiled the Engineering Technology Education Bibliography for 18 years.

In addition to her involvement in the ASEE, she is active in the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics and the Association for Business Communication (ABC), serving on the editorial boards of two journals and editing a teaching column for ABC’s pedagogical journal.
